Blossom Search provides high-quality results, like Google. but also has these advantages:

  • No advertisements. Blossom never adds advertisements to search results, so you will never get links to competitor or inappropriate sites. (Look at the ads Google returns for "meeting" or "contact".)
  • Fresher index. Blossom will update your search index daily, weekly, or on request. (Google may take a month or longer between updates.)
  • More control over index contents. With Blossom, you can create a single index that spans multiple sites or includes just portions of a site. Also, explicit portions of a page can be excluded, such as navigation text or advertisements. Blossom guarantees that the index will include exactly what you want. (Google guarantees nothing.)
  • More control over search output. Blossom Search gives you full control over the appearance of the search results page, allowing it to be fully integrated with your site design. You can also control the appearance of each search match. (Google lets you put your logo at the top of the results page.)
  • Search term highlighting. As an option, you can have Blossom retrieve pages for your visitors and highlight their search terms on the page, making it easy to see where the matched terms are. This is similar to using Google's "cache", but with Blossom your visitor sees the current page, rather than the old one in Google's cache.
  • Phrase-based suggestions. When a search turns up too many results, Blossom will suggest refinements based on an analysis of the phrases on your site. (Google just returns a long list of hits.)
  • Organize output by file type. Easily show matches just in HTML, PDF, or word processing documents. (Google just returns a long list of hits.)
  • Customized search categories. Search results can be organized into categories you choose, helping your visitors find what they are looking for. (Google just returns a long list of hits.)
  • Customized synonyms. Define word and phrase synonyms that make sense for your site, such as the expansion of acronyms and local jargon. (Google does not support synonyms.)
  • More precise spell checking. Blossom uses a custom dictionary for spelling correction. When a search is submitted to Blossom Search, the search terms are checked against the actual words on the site. If a term doesn't match any word, Blossom will suggest words on the site that are close in spelling. This is especially useful for names. (Google uses a general dictionary.)
  • Tuned for site search. Blossom Search was designed for searching controlled collections of sites. Unlike Google, Blossom can rely on accurate meta tags and does not have to detect "authoritative" sites. (Google's fight against search engine spam forces it to ignore useful meta data. Also, Google's famous PageRank algorithm for finding authoritative sites is not effective for an index of just a few sites.)
  • Weekly report of activity. Each week Blossom will send you a report detailing what your visitors searched for and what they found. The report also contains a historical log of searches. Online, you can get other reports about your search index--you can even watch your search requests in real time. (Google provides no reporting.)
  • Quality help in minutes. Perhaps most valuable of all, Blossom's experienced support staff will help you create exactly the search facility you want, whether you need assistance creating your first index or need a customized solution for a complex problem. Try asking Google for help!
